Italy to Partake in White House Initiative of “Board of Peace”

(MENAFN) Italy will participate as an observer in the White House’s new initiative, the “Board of Peace,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed on Sunday. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Meloni said that Rome had received an invitation and intends to respond positively.

“We were invited as an observer country, and in our view, it is a good solution regarding the problem of the war in the Middle East,” she said. Meloni noted that constitutional constraints prevent Italy from formally joining the body, but emphasized that the country fully supports the initiative. She described the Middle East as a priority for Italy, demonstrated through ongoing diplomatic engagement in the region.

Meloni added that the level of Italian representation at the Board’s meetings has not yet been finalized, as invitations were only recently extended to European partners. She also suggested that other European countries, particularly Mediterranean nations and those geographically close to the region, might participate in a similar observer role.

Her comments coincided with consultations involving European leaders and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who has been attending EU meetings focused on Gaza.

The Board of Peace was launched on Jan. 22 during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, when representatives of 19 countries signed its charter. The initiative aims to advance peaceful settlements, starting with the Gaza Strip, while promoting global peacemaking. Washington has indicated that additional countries have since joined the effort.
The Board’s first leaders-level meeting is scheduled for Feb. 19 in Washington, DC. Italian media have reported that Tajani could represent Rome at the meeting, though no final decision has yet been announced.

This move signals Italy’s continued engagement in Middle East diplomacy, balancing its constitutional limits with a commitment to supporting international peace initiatives.
